An Introduction to Our Youth Groups
Our church is blessed with an active and vibrant youth group that participates in various activities throughout the year. Youth are divided into three age groups:
Younger Youth (4th grade and down)
MIddle Youth (5th through 8th grade)
Older Youth (9th grade and up)
Our goal is to help our youth:
increase in their knowledge of God's word,
understand the importance of service to others, and
develop friendships with other youth who are like-minded in their desire to mature into Christian men and women.
Our youth attend conferences, such as CYC, which is a weekend event held annually in Gatlinburg, TN, in February. This event is designed for older youth and features keynote speakers such as Kyle Butt, David Shannon, Brad Montague, and Lonnie Jones. This event consists of 3 sessions beginning on Friday evening, continuing through Saturday and ending on Sunday morning with a worship service. CYC is especially geared toward teenagers and the struggles and problems they face every day. Although this conference is geared toward young people, most adults who attend agree that they leave blessed by the messages they hear.
Area-Wide Youth Swap
Youth swap is a quarterly event shared by the area churches of Christ that include: Red Walnut, Beacon, Scotts Hill, Decaturville and Parsons. During this event, youth from each congregation attend a Wednesday evening service filled with singing, worship, food and fellowship at the host church.
Summer Youth Series (SYS)
SYS is held each Monday night through out the summer months. Various congregations in West and Middle Tennessee host this event for an evening of singing and worship, followed by food and fellowship.
Vacation Bible School (VBS)
VBS is held each year during the summer (dates varying from year to year). VBS generally lasts for four (4) nights (Sunday – Wednesday). During VBS, the church is decorated with vivid, colorful decorations to match the theme for the week. Each year, the theme for VBS changes; yet, the mission is the same: To spread God's word to young people in our congregation and in the community.
Trick or Trunk
Trick or Trunk is held each year at Halloween. It’s a fun-filled time when the adults get to escape to their youth and decorate their cars, and in some cases, themselves! This is done in preparation for the younger youth to dress in costume and “trick or treat” at each vehicle. For a good time and safe trick-or-treating at Halloween, it's hard to beat Trick or Trunk!
Christmas caroling is an annual event held right before Christmas. The youth visit the elderly and shut-in members of our congregation and sing Christmas carols. The recipients of these visits eagerly awaiting the arrival of the carolers. Not only are the recipients blessed by the visit, but the youth enjoy it just as much.
Our youth attend Mid-South Youth Camp and Horizons, both hosted by Freed-Hardeman University in Henderson, TN. MSYC is a traditional summer camp for ages 9-18 that runs from Sunday to Friday morning with campers spending the night each night. MSYC Junior Camp is a day camp for ages 7-8, running Monday through Thursday from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM.
Monthly Youth Devotionals and Activities
Each month, youth leaders plan a group devotional or activity for the youth to enjoy. Devo's are a time of fellowship, Bible study, and learning how God's word may be applied to their daily lives. Our youth also enjoy local outings, lock-ins, Easter Egg hunts, filling Magi boxes to be sent to children in South America and service projects for older church members. The older youth are encouraged to assist on projects with members of the younger youth group. This gives them an opportunity to have a positive influence on the youngest members of our congregation.
Youth Service Projects
The older youth in our church work with the deacons to complete service projects for the widows in our congregation. Projects include yard work, cleaning gutters, building a handicap ramp or even building a deck. The projects help show our youth the importance of serving others. We try to do at least four service projects per year. Our youth get a sense of accomplishment from completing the projects. The recipients of the projects are always very appreciative as well. These projects help our widows and youth develop closer relationships.
