Reaching out to neighbors is a fundamental teaching found throughout the scriptures. Jesus taught that we must love our neighbors as ourselves. Our congregration strives to demonstrate that love through various works and activities. We invite you to take a moment and see some of the exciting things that our congregration is doing to reach out to our community.
“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” And He said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the great and foremost commandment. The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’
Clifton Prison Ministry
The scripture is full of examples of people who were in prison being taught the good news of Jesus Christ. We are blessed to have the opportunity to be involved in a ministry that is focused on these same people. The Clifton Prison Ministry has been taking the word of God to the prisoners in Clifton, TN for many years. The East Side Church of Christ in Paris, TN oversees this ministry. This ministry has given some of our members the opportunity to participate in bible correspondence with many of the inmates. The bible says the Gospel is for all, and the Clifton Prison Ministry is meeting that need.
Each October, members from the church in Parsons collect items from their homes to give away to the community. The idea came from yard sales and flea markets, but we gave it a twist by making everything free! We give away the same types of items you would normally find at a yard sale. It is a blessing to give a happy child a toy or a neighbor a bicycle. We appreciate the positive reception this event always receives from the community.
Decatur County World's Largest Coon Hunt
A group of members from our congregation volunteer each year to assist in serving food at the Decatur County St. Jude World’s Largest Coon Hunt. The proceeds from the coon hunt go to help St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Children in our community have been blessed by this institution, and we feel blessed to particpate in this event. Our volunteers enjoy a time of service, fellowship and the opportunity to give back to our community.
Hot Chocolate Giveaway
Members from the church in Parsons give away hot chocolate each year during the city’s Christmas parade. The hot chocolate is typically an excellent drink to warm people up on a cold winter evening. We set up a table in front of the church building and hand out cups of hot chocolate and marshmallows to anyone interested. We will even take cups of hot chocolate to some of the participants in the parade. Santa gives us candy and we give him a cup of hot chocolate.
Bible Coorespondence Courses
Bible coorespondence courses are offered to any individual who would like to take advantage of studying God's word with a member of our congregation. Numerous courses are conducted on an ongoing basis. Please contact a member of our congregation by phone at 731-847-2462 or submit a written request at P.O Box 216, Parsons, TN, 38363.
Area Wide Gospel Meeting
One of the highlights of our year is participating each September in an annual Area Wide Gospel Meeting sponsored by the churches of Christ in Decatur County. During this event, we are able to assemble with our brothers and sisters from other congregations in the area for a period of worship, Bible study, and fellowship. Responsibilities for hosting the event rotate between five congregations: the Beacon Church of Christ (Parsons), the Central Church of Christ (Decaturville), the Parsons Church of Christ (Parsons), the Red Walnut Church of Christ (Bath Springs), and the Scotts Hill Church of Christ (Scotts Hill). The location for the gospel meeting varies between Parsons, Bath Springs, and Scotts Hill, depending on which congregation is hosting, but it is always held at a community location. We want you to know that visitor’s are not only welcome to attend – they are encouraged to do so! We hope to see you in September!
